Upcycled Hot Bag – Non-Electric Slow Cooker / Hot Box Thermal Cooking Bag
R350.00
A real life-saver when it comes to load shedding, and just as useful for camping! These non-electric thermal cooker bags keep a pot hot (or cold) for up to 8 hours. It functions like a slow cooker, except that you have to bring the pot to a boil on a stove or fire first and simmer there for 5 minutes. Once the food is simmering, transfer the pot to the cooker bag to continue cooking – thus saving the energy that would otherwise be needed to cook the food to completion.
Cook rice in 20-30 minutes, cook mielie pap in 30-40 minutes, cook chicken stew in 3-4 hours, cook beef stew in 6-8 hours – ideal to put on before work, or before you go to sleep.
As a bonus, you use less water, meaning the food is crisper, tastier and less soggy than with conventional cooking. As with stews, the long cooking time helps flavours to develop and blend. Also, because the food cooks below 100 degrees, it helps to preserve heat-sensitive nutrients like vitamins C and B… meaning your food is more delicious and healthier all at the same time.
It is made from upcycled corporate waste, with the outer lining consisting of 100% cotton, and broken polystyrene pieces for insulation. It is a two-piece set, designed such that you can shape it to suit a wide variety of pot shapes – whether tall and skinny, or fat and short, these bags fit them all! It can accommodate pots from 3 litres to 10 litres comfortably. One size truly fits most!
Please note the colour will probably be black or navy, depending on what fabric we have available.

Description
What a brilliant way to beat the load shedding blues! A non-electric cooking aid, that saves energy, money, CO2 emissions, it’s made from waste, and it makes your food healthier and tastier! Can’t get better than that!
These thermal cooker bags use 30 – 80% the energy of conventional cooking methods. You bring a pot of food to the boil on a stove or fire, then let it simmer for 5 minutes. Once simmering, you transfer the pot to the slow cooker thermal bag, and place the bag’s lid on and secure it snugly. Leave the food inside the bag to cook to completion, thus saving electricity, fire wood, gas or whatever else you would normally use. It not only saves energy, but also money, because energy is expensive! And because it saves energy, it also reduces your carbon footprint.
It is made entirely from upcycled waste, in an effort to divert waste from landfill, while up-skilling unemployed communities around Johannesburg.
Besides all the sustainable stuff, it really also results in healthier and tastier food – give it a try, you won’t go back to the old ways!
You can also use it to make home-made yogurt, or use it as a bread prover to help dough rise.
Note the colours and motives are random – we try to stick to navy and black, but depending what factory offcut fabric is available it may differ.
