How wonderful that nature gave us exactly what we need to wash and scrub, without requiring plastics! Spell it however you like… loofah, loofa, or luffa… Invest in your health, your wallet and the earth with this long-lasting, entirely natural sponge, that doubles as exfoliating scrub. In case you didn’t know what a loofah is… It is the dried fruit of a cucumber-like vining plant in the squash family, usually of the species Luffa acutangula or Luffa aegyptiaca. In some parts of the world (like China), the plants can be grown in a factory-like setup, with artificial lighting and climate control, thereafter chemically treated and bleached to yield a very pale looking loofa sponge. These are the pale imported ones you usually see in chain stores. However, these Holisteeq loofah sponges were grown in natural, organic conditions outdoors in South Africa (in the Highveld) and not chemically bleached. Therefore, they are darker than their pale imported counterparts. Despite the colour difference, they are even more sustainable, healthy and environmentally friendly than commercially available loofah sponges, and equally effective.
Because these loofahs are sold whole, you can also use them for crafts such as soap making.
Seriously, if you are not (for whatever reason) growing your own, you really should be giving this a try!
Directions for use:
Wet the loofah with warm water. Rub soap or body wash on it (a little goes a long way, as the air pockets in the loofah encourages foaming). Rub it gently over your body for soft exfoliating cleaning action, or rub harder for a more intense exfoliation. Be gentle around sensitive areas. Air dry after use to prolong its life. Sanitise it once a week by washing it in the laundry, or boiling it in water on the stove for 10 minutes, or microwaving it on high for 30 seconds. (This sanitation should also be applied once a week to nylon shower sponges to eliminate bacterial growth, but it is a lesser known fact.)
